A little extra fabric. A lot of possibility.

DIY GUIDE / MEASURING

Measure twice.
Choose once.

A few notes on paper can make a fabric purchase much easier. Start with the finished shape, then work out the separate pieces needed to sew it.

1. Draw every panel

List the top, bottom, sides, flaps, and any extra strips. A cushion top and bottom are only part of a boxed cushion; its side band and closure need fabric too.

2. Record finished dimensions in inches

Measure the actual object and intended fit. Keep finished measurements separate from cutting measurements. Allowances depend on your seam, hem, closure, overlap, and construction method.

3. Check the usable fabric width

A linear yard is 36 inches along the roll, across the roll’s full width. One yard of 60″ fabric is 36″ long × 60″ wide. Edges or selvage can reduce the width you can use.

4. Lay out the cutting pieces

Add the allowances you need, then check whether each panel fits. Keep fabric direction and pattern alignment consistent. If a panel is wider than the usable fabric, it may need a seam or a different construction plan.

5. Compare the plan with the listing

Special-order material is requested in whole yards. In-stock material is sold as the entire listed piece, even if your project needs less. Confirm final piece size before purchasing.

A planning estimate does not replace a cutting plan or professional fit review.
